When I travel to Europe, I prefer to stay in Airbnbs. I’ve found that it’s much more affordable than hotels are and provides a unique experience.
I’m happy we went with an Airbnb in Lisbon. We had a really cool experience at our Lisbon Time apartment. Here’s a video tour of the space, with more details in the post below.
Alfama is a safe, quaint and scenic neighborhood. It is a very short walking distance to several attractions (like Castelo de Jorge) and is right near the water.
It’s located off a street that appears on Google Maps but is tricky to find. After getting slightly turned around, we found the windy cobblestone street and followed it. Along the way, we got curious looks from older Portuguese ladies peering out from their windows lined with clothes drying. It felt like a scene straight out of a movie! It felt very safe.
Another bonus: there’s a full-scale grocery store a 10 min walk away.
One floor walk-up (steep, narrow steps but manageable), available for entire house rental. Brand new, fully furnished:
As opposed to a personal host/owner, it is managed more formally by a small staff including a concierge. Once our arrival time was confirmed, someone dropped off the keys to us and showed us around the apartment. They even messaged us throghout our stay to make sure we were comfortable. The entire staff we dealt with was extremely polite, helpful, and responsive!
To/From Airport: Going to the airport is easy via Uber by pinning your location to one of the shops on the main street. However, Uber does not pick up from the airport. I recommend taking a taxi in order to get as close to your stay as possible. The area is hilly and the apartment isn’t easy to find when you first arrive. So the last thing you want to do (which we made the mistake of) is get dropped off far away via public transpo and have to navigate your way up hill, dragging luggage.
Around the City: Walking is safe. It’s hilly – wear flats with tread. We didn’t take the subway, but I hear it’s clean, safe, and reliable.
Highly recommend. The Airbnb listing (and my review) for Lisbon Time is here.
