I get to Monique’s booth and I’m excited to comb through her racks full of amazing, affordable pieces. Suddenly, I see a piece peaking out — it’s a beautiful blush color, an interesting texture, and LONG with panels and buttons. Now I’m intrigued. I pull it off the rack (it’s heavy, 100% cotton!) and immediately fall in love. Is it a dress or coat…or both? One question remains: How does it look on?
Tip: When in doubt, try things on!! You can better gauge the potential when you can see how it fits, falls and looks when you view yourself in the mirror.
When I tried it on, I channeled my inner Tracee Ellis Ross – she’d OWN this piece. She pushes the boundaries through her use of pattern and texture, standing tall in her high heels, and topping off her looks with her awesome hairdos. Some of her best looks – and there are many – are here and below.
It’s an Indian duster by Sangham Imports. I believe from the 70’s. Searching the brand on the interwebs only brings back a couple options. Hopefully more of these pop up!
Anyway, while trying it on, Monique and I attempted to modernize it by cuffing it and visualizing it being styled with a strong pump and chunky jewelry to set it off.
Shout out to Critsey Rowe for the fun photoshoot – thanks for capturing the essence of this awesome piece so well. Check her out and more of her work on her website.
BTW, you may have noticed that the label is still on the bottom of the shoes. I bought these — I promise. Frankly, I’m the too lazy to remove labels off of things. Kanye shrug #strangehabit
Sangam Imports (Made in India) cotton duster from The Bargain District – I can’t find much info on this brand, but it looks like it’s available only via resale. thredUP has items every now and then
