This African print dress is outside of the box…even for me! I don’t have a lot of prints, but I’m changing that because I’m getting bored with solids.
I found myself in a phase of really digging African prints. Thanks to the heavens above for bringing Zuvaa and their wide array of African merchandise to NYC. They do pop up shops in different cities throughout the year.
When the Glamour event came up, I narrowed my outfit options down to two pieces – either a pair of royal blue wide legged pants (feminine chic, yet sassy) or this dress. I thought — I’m going to be in a room full of women bosses and in Brooklyn (where I live). I need to own this opportunity. Definitely no black and no solids. I wanted to create a conversation around my look and stand out. So, the dress won.
However, the onset of cool fall weather threw me a curveball. I ended up having to layer in an Alix Varick turtleneck bodysuit. The shoes are Schutz ankle tie pumps (similar versions here and here). My awesome friend, Xica – hearing about the high slit on the dress – recommended wearing black leggings underneath. I would have NEVER thought to pull such a dope styling move. Not only did it feel powerful, but it also kept my legs warm. I’m about fashion AND function :).
